HHR Storage Heaters | High Heat Retention | Economy 7 Replacement
High heat retention (HHR) storage heaters are the modern replacement for the old Economy 7 storage heaters found in millions of UK homes. Where traditional storage heaters were inefficient, difficult to control, and wasteful, our ThermaStore HHR range is BRE-certified, retains heat for up to 24 hours, and gives you genuine control over how and when heat is released — making them a genuinely practical upgrade.
High Heat Retention Storage Heaters — Modern, Efficient, BRE Certified
Our HHR storage heaters charge overnight on cheaper off-peak electricity tariffs and release stored heat gradually throughout the day. Unlike older storage heaters, the ThermaStore HHR incorporates a high-performance core that retains heat efficiently, reducing heat loss and giving you more usable warmth from each charge. Output control allows you to manage how much heat is released at different times — something old storage heaters simply could not do.
Available in 1650W to 3400W charging inputs. Eligible for ECO4 and local authority funding in some circumstances. Free UK delivery. Contact our team to discuss suitability for your property.

£129.00HHR Storage Heaters vs Old Economy 7 Storage Heaters
Old Economy 7 storage heaters — the ones found in properties built from the 1970s onwards — used basic materials to store heat and had limited output control. They would charge overnight but release most of their heat too quickly, leaving rooms cool by late afternoon. The ThermaStore HHR solves this with a denser, higher-performance core material that holds heat for longer, combined with precise output control that allows heat to be released when you actually need it.
How High Heat Retention Storage Heaters Work
HHR storage heaters work by heating a dense core material using off-peak overnight electricity (typically Economy 7 or Economy 10 tariffs, where electricity is cheaper at night). The charged core then releases heat slowly throughout the day. Unlike old storage heaters where heat loss was largely uncontrolled, the ThermaStore HHR uses a combination of insulation and output dampers to control the rate of heat release — so you can retain more heat for evening use when demand peaks.
ThermaStore HHR: Models & Specifications
The ThermaStore HHR range is available in three sizes: the 1650W input model suitable for rooms up to approximately 15m², the 2550W model for medium rooms up to 22m², and the 3400W model for larger rooms up to 30m². All models are BRE-tested and certified, require no gas connection or plumbing, and are installed directly to a dedicated electrical circuit. Professional installation is required.
Are HHR Storage Heaters Right for Your Property?
HHR storage heaters are best suited to properties currently using old Economy 7 storage heaters, properties without gas central heating, flats and houses where off-peak electricity tariffs are available, and social housing or rental properties where running costs are a primary concern. If your property is on a standard electricity tariff, electric radiators with programmable timers may be more appropriate — contact us for advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace my old storage heaters with HHR models?
Yes — in most cases HHR storage heaters are a direct replacement for old Economy 7 units, using the same dedicated wiring circuit.
Do I need to switch tariff?
No change is required if you are already on an Economy 7 or off-peak tariff. If you are on a standard tariff, discuss options with your energy supplier before investing in storage heaters.
Is professional installation required?
Yes — HHR storage heaters require connection to a dedicated circuit and must be installed by a qualified electrician.
